What Can and Cannot Go in a Dumpster: Complete Rules Guide

One of the most common questions people ask when renting a dumpster for the first time is "what can I throw in a dumpster?" The good news is that the vast majority of household, construction, and commercial waste can go in a roll-off dumpster without any issues. But there are important exceptions. Putting prohibited items in a dumpster can result in additional fees, load rejection at the landfill, or even legal penalties. This guide covers everything you can and cannot throw in a dumpster so there are no surprises.

At 904 Dumpster, we are a locally owned dumpster rental company serving Jacksonville and Northeast Florida since 2016. We provide 10, 15, and 20-yard roll-off dumpsters for residential and commercial projects with flat-rate pricing starting at $299.

What Cannot Go in a Dumpster

Now for the prohibited items. These materials are restricted because they are hazardous to human health, damaging to the environment, or regulated by federal and state law. Putting hazardous materials into the dumpster is not just against company policy; it can violate environmental regulations.

    Hazardous Materials (Never Allowed)

Prohibited ItemWhy It Is ProhibitedProper Disposal
Paint (liquid)Toxic chemicals contaminate soil and waterDry it out completely or take to HHW facility

Batteries (car, lithium, rechargeable)Corrosive, toxic metalsAuto parts stores, battery recyclers

    Other Restricted Items

Tires: Most dumpster companies, including ours, do not accept tires because landfills charge a separate tire disposal fee. Take tires to a tire dealer or recycler. Some will accept them for free; others charge a small per-tire fee.

Appliances with refrigerants: Refrigerators, freezers, air conditioning units, and dehumidifiers contain refrigerant gases (Freon) that must be professionally recovered before disposal. The appliance itself can go in a dumpster once the refrigerant is removed by a certified technician.

Electronics (e-waste): TVs, computer monitors, and other electronics contain lead, mercury, and other hazardous materials. Jacksonville offers e-waste recycling at several locations. While some small electronics can technically go in a dumpster, recycling is the environmentally responsible choice.

Hot water heaters: These are typically accepted but may require special arrangements due to size. Contact us before loading one.

    Common Questions About Specific Items

Can You Throw Paint Cans in a Dumpster?

Can you throw away paint in a dumpster? It depends on the paint's condition:

  • Empty paint cans with dried residue: Yes. Remove the lid, let any remaining paint dry completely (or add cat litter to speed drying), and toss them in.
  • Cans with liquid paint: No. Liquid paint is considered hazardous waste. You cannot throw liquid paint in a dumpster regardless of the amount.
  • Latex paint can be dried out at home by leaving lids off in a ventilated area or adding paint hardener/cat litter. Once fully solid, it can go in the dumpster.
  • Oil-based paint must go to the Jacksonville Household Hazardous Waste facility even when dried.
  • Can You Put Glass in a Dumpster?

Can you put glass in a dumpster? Yes. Broken glass, glass bottles, window panes, mirror glass, and glass tabletops are all accepted. For safety, wrap or box large pieces of broken glass so they do not create a hazard for the people handling the dumpster.

Can You Throw Mulch in the Garbage?

Can you throw mulch in the garbage? Old mulch is organic material and is accepted in a dumpster. However, it may be more practical to compost it, use it as fill, or put it in your yard waste bin. If you are doing a major landscaping project that generates a large volume of mulch, a 10-yard dumpster handles the job easily.

Can I Throw Dirt in the Garbage?

Can I throw dirt in the garbage? Not in your regular curbside trash can, but dirt can go in a roll-off dumpster. The main concern is weight. Dirt weighs approximately 2,200 to 2,600 pounds per cubic yard, so it fills the weight limit quickly. If you have a significant amount of dirt to dispose of, contact us to discuss the best approach. For more about heavy material disposal, see our weight limits guide.

Is It Illegal to Put a Mattress in a Dumpster?

Is it illegal to put a mattress in a dumpster? No. Mattresses are a standard accepted item in roll-off dumpsters. There is no law in Florida prohibiting mattress disposal in a dumpster. Some states have mattress recycling laws, but Florida does not currently require mattress recycling. We accept mattresses, box springs, and foam toppers without any restrictions.

Can You Throw a Couch in a Dumpster?

Absolutely. Couches, recliners, loveseats, and all types of upholstered furniture are accepted. A standard couch fits in any of our dumpster sizes. For more tips on furniture disposal, see our furniture disposal guide.

Items That Cannot Be Recycled (But Can Go in a Dumpster)

Some people confuse "not recyclable" with "cannot go in a dumpster." These items cannot be recycled but are perfectly fine for dumpster disposal:

  • Styrofoam and packing peanuts
  • Mirrors and window glass (recyclable glass must be bottle/jar glass)
  • Ceramics and pottery
  • Heavily soiled paper and cardboard
  • Mixed-material packaging
  • Wax-coated cardboard (like frozen food boxes)
  • Plastic bags (not accepted in single-stream recycling but can go in a dumpster)
  • Things that cannot be recycled due to contamination can still go in a standard dumpster
  • For a deeper dive into what is recyclable from construction and renovation projects, see our recycling guide for Jacksonville projects.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Most household items, construction debris, furniture, mattresses, yard waste, and general junk can go in a dumpster. The main exceptions are hazardous materials (paint, chemicals, batteries), appliances with refrigerants, tires, and medical waste. When in doubt, call us and ask.

Empty paint cans with dried residue are accepted. Cans containing liquid paint are not allowed. To prepare latex paint for disposal, remove the lid and let it dry completely, or add cat litter to absorb the liquid. Oil-based paint must go to a hazardous waste facility regardless of its state.

Yes. Glass of all types, including broken glass, window panes, mirrors, and glass bottles, is accepted in a dumpster. Wrap or box sharp pieces for safety.

No. Mattresses are a common and accepted item in roll-off dumpsters. There are no laws in Florida prohibiting mattress disposal in a dumpster. Simply place the mattress in the dumpster along with your other items.

If a prohibited item is found during load inspection at the landfill, it may result in additional fees, load rejection (meaning the entire load is returned), or fines. It is always better to separate prohibited items beforehand and dispose of them properly through designated facilities.

Small electronics like phones, alarm clocks, and kitchen gadgets can technically go in a dumpster, but recycling is strongly recommended. Large electronics like TVs and monitors contain hazardous materials and should go to an e-waste recycler. Jacksonville has several e-waste drop-off locations throughout the city.

Both dirt and mulch are accepted, but weight is the main concern. Dirt is extremely heavy (over 2,000 lbs per cubic yard) and will reach the weight limit quickly. Mulch is lighter but can be composted instead. Contact us to discuss your project if you have significant amounts of either material.
